The National Autistic Society (NAS), the UK’s leading charity for people affected by autism, is launching a new branch in Preston next week.
The Mayor of Preston, NAS Chief Executive Mark Lever, NAS Regional Director Adrian Chubb, and NAS Regional Co-ordinator Francine Brower will be attending the event at Corpus Christi Catholic Sports College, St Vincent's Road, Fulwood, on Tuesday, October 14, at 4pm, to celebrate the new NAS presence in the region.
There will be stands and displays from local organisations, an autism bookstall and a talented local 17-year-old singer who has Asperger Syndrome, a form of autism, will be performing.
NAS branches are parent-led support groups that meet regularly to offer mutual support, advice and information.
The Preston branch developed from local need and meets once a month at a local indoor play area. There is a free lending library with around 120 autism-related books, as well as autism-related software and multi-media technology.
The branch will produce regular newsletters and organise parties and social events such as swimming sessions.
It also aims to give information about local services and signposting people to appropriate local sources of advice.
The officers of the new Preston and District branch are Peter and Helen Van Parys and Christine Walker, who are parents of children on the spectrum.
Christine said: “We are very excited about the launch of our new branch.
"We would like to invite anyone who is affected by autism in the area to come along to our event and help us celebrate.
"There will be the chance to learn more about the support group and opportunities to get involved.”
