A NEW series of stamps celebrating the pioneers of the industrial revolution has been unveiled by the Royal Mail.

One features Richard Arkwright, inventor of the weaving frame and one of Lancashire’s textile pioneers.

Arkwright, from Preston, along with Blackburn’s James Hargreaves, inventor of the Spinning Jenny, laid the foundations of the cotton weaving industry upon which Lancashire would prosper during the industrial revolution and beyond.

The Royal Mail said the issue marked the 250th anniversary of Wedgwood setting up a pottery works in Burslem, Staffordshire and the bicentenary of steam engine pioneer Matthew Boulton’s death.
