Revellers at Preston's Avenham Park tomorrow, for the annual Easter Monday egg roll, will be able to use the new £1million pavilion which will be open for the first time.

The pavilion, which is part of the £5m restoration project of Avenham and Miller Park, has a cafe, an exhibition space, public toilets, a park ranger base and a drop-in centre for the police's On the Beat scheme.

Visitors to the park on will also be able to enjoy the city's traditional Easter festivities which this year features a full day of activities including the city's famous egg rolling competition where people of all ages will decorate eggs and roll them down the hill.

There will be also be more than five hours of free entertainment from 10am including an Easter bonnet parade, Punch and Judy show and live music from the Lazy River Jazz Band, the Silver Bell Band and the Preston Concert Band.

Visitors will also be able to inspect two full-sized replicas of two historic Sebastopol cannon, which were removed from the park in the 1960s, which have been installed.

Other improvements that form the first phase of the Avenham and Miller Parks restoration project include work carried out on the belvedere in Miller Park, the Boar war memorial and the Victorian stone work on the steps and urns.

The pavilion will have an official opening ceremony next Friday, March 28, with officials from the Single Regeneration Budget which provided some of the funding.

There will be a second launch with other partners, including the Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Regional Development Fund, in April.

Visitors to the park tomorrow are warned that parking close to the park is limited and the usual parking restrictions around Ribblesdale Place and Winckley Square apply.

Visitors are asked to use signed car parks, such as Avenham car park, Fishergate car park and the bus station car park, where charges apply.

There is also limited free parking at Lancashire County Council's East Cliff offices.
