HOLCOMBE Brook Primary school is certainly in a class of its own with a crop of sporting talent.

The school lifted the coveted Geoff Preston primary school special recognition accolade, at the Bury Sports Awards.

The award, for outstanding sporting achievement in 2010-11, was presented to staff member Eileen Ingham. She was also nominated for the Unsung Hero Award for her dedicated work in sport at the Longsight Road school over the last 20 years.

The citation stated that Holcombe Brook Primary has implemented a varied programme of PE and sports and involved extra-curricular development. This has resulted in improving standards and enjoyment across the school and the winning of several trophies.

Successes included winning the Years Three and Four girls’ football tournament, joint winners of a Year Five and Six girls football competition and fourth in another tournament. Holcombe Brook Primary also won the primary schools basketball tournament and the boys’ cross country and cross country relay titles. Pupils also won the tag rugby tournament and came second in the Bury Junior Schools Sports Association girls’ football tournament. Additionally, the school won the primary school orienteering trophy and took third place in the indoor athletics final.

Headteacher Graham Howarth said he and his staff were delighted.
