Leyland security firm offers student safety advice

A Leyland-based security firm has offered some timely advice to the thousands of new students who are descending on the county’s universities and colleges.

The region boasts some of the UK’s best educational establishments including the University of Central Lancashire, in Preston, Cardinal Newman College and Preston College, Preston and Runshaw College, Leyland.

For many of the new students arriving in Lancashire it will be their first time away from home and while it will be an exciting experience, the statistics show that students have a higher than average chance of becoming a victim of crime.

With that in mind, the Kudos Group has produced some top tips for students to try and make sure their days at university and colleges are crime-free.

Mark Prendergast, Kudos’ new group business development director, said: “Most people look back on their days at university and college as among the best in their lives – and Lancashire has more than its fair share of top educational establishments.

“However being away from home for the first time is a daunting experience and finding your way in an area you are not familiar with can be intimidating.

“With Freshers’ Week upon us, we thought it would be sensible to remind students of some of the simple measures they can take to reduce the chances of becoming a victim of crime.

“Most youngsters these days have stereos, CDs, DVDs and maybe even a laptop so it’s hardly surprising that the British Crime Survey estimate that one in three students becomes a victim of crime while they’re at university.

“However students can make it tougher for the criminal so let’s all try and make sure our college and university days really are the best - crime-free - days of our life.”
