Leyland thief ordered to pay back cash

A Leyland office worker who stole from her employers has been ordered to pay back over £21,000 from the proceeds of her crime.

Mother-of-two Jayne Sherlock, 43, of Leadale Road, Leyland pleaded guilty to eight theft offences against her employer, New Progress Housing Ltd earlier this year.

The court also took 163 similar offences into consideration.

Sherlock was arrested in April 2007 for theft and sentenced March to 12 months imprisonment.

Lancashire Constabulary’s Southern Division Financial Investigation Unit applied for confiscation of her assets under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Yesterday, Judge Slinger at Preston Crown Court ordered that Sherlock had benefited from her offences to the value of £89,895 and that she should pay back £21,553.

The money was directed to be paid within six months and if she fails to pay the full amount of £21,553 in this time, she will serve an additional 18 months imprisonment and will still have to pay the full amount, plus interest.

All monies recovered will be paid back to her employers. Sherlock took an average of £400 a week, across a four year period, ending in March 2007, while a purchasing assistant for the New Progress Housing Group, based in King Street, Leyland.

Financial Investigator Lyndsie Ashton from Southern Division Financial Investigation Unit said: "The money was spent on everyday items and trying to deal with a debt problem, she had not led an extravagant lifestyle but Sherlock should not be allowed to enjoy the profits from her offences and anyone looking to fund their lifestyle from crime should take note."
