Police in South Ribble are warning residents to keep their keys safe and doors locked when in their gardens following a spate of thefts in the Penwortham area where thieves have pushed a stick or hook type device through a letter box and hooked the car or house keys.
At one address the thieves used the 'hook and cane' system to steal the front door keys of a Penwortham property and made off in a car parked outside.
Beverley Warburton, crime prevention officer, said: "As we finally start to enjoy some good weather we want to raise the public's awareness about home and property safety.
"By taking a few extra minutes to check that doors and windows of your home are secure and your vehicle locked will help try and prevent a crime occurring."
