A man from the Barton area of Preston has been killed in a fatal road accident in Singleton, near Blackpool.

Christopher Stuart, 48, of Jepps Lane, Barton, suffered fatal injuries when the car he was travelling in ploughed through a hedge into a tree before flipping over.

The crash happened around 10:25 pm on the A586 Garstang New Road, just after the Singleton crossroads.

Road Policing Sergeant, Peter Beresford said: "The police are appealing for witnesses and are trying to trace anybody who might have momentarily stopped to help, saw the accident itself or saw the vehicle driving beforehand.

"The vehicle travelled from Blackpool along the A586 Garstang Road towards Singleton crossroads and the collision occurred just through the traffic lights controlled junction, heading towards Garstang.

"It is believed that there are a number of witnesses outstanding, including a lorry driver who momentarily stopped to offer assistance at the scene. Those witnesses that have come forward already and provided a statement have been most helpful. This is a tragic incident involving the death of a male passenger in the vehicle."

The driver of the car has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving is currently in police custody awaiting interview, having spent a short time in hospital.

Any witness is to contact Blackpool police on 01253 293933 quoting log number 257NQ/010208
