FORMER postal worker Abdul Musa’s treatment after blowing the whistle about ‘endemic racism’ at Blackburn’s sorting office is extremely worrying.
In a 62 page employment tribunal decision, a judge ruled that Mr Musa was unfairly dismissed and upheld his racial discrimination claims.
The fact that the judgement labelled the Royal Mail’s own investigation of the complaints made by Mr Musa as ‘shambolic’ highlights something very disturbing especially since it involves such a large employer.
It is also extremely concerning that it should take six years from the initial complaints for the whole issue be sorted out.
It is a ridiculously long time for someone to have to wait for justice.
The tribunal judgement raises important questions about the part apparently played by the union in representing workers who have been shown to be in the wrong but not the claimant Mr Musa.
Blackburn MP Jack Straw summed up the situation well when he said “behaviour like this has always been unacceptable, but in this day and age it is outrageous and doesn’t do anyone any credit”.
