Lancashire made a solid start to the rain-interrupted LV= County Championship Division One Roses clash at Headingley, before Yorkshire made progress to leave the match finely poised going into the second day.

Heavy showers meant there was no play before 4.45pm on Sunday, with the opening day’s play restricted to 28 overs as a result.

After the enforced delay Lancashire’s openers Paul Horton and Luis Reece moved them to 70 without loss, before Yorkshire hit back to make it 87 for two at the close of play.

The rain was a blow for high-flying Yorkshire, who are aiming to win their first four-day Roses match in 12 years this week.

The hosts won the toss and elected to field, but Horton and Reece came out in no mood to relinquish that fine record without a fight.

Their partnership brought up an unbeaten half century after 12 overs – Lancashire’s first opening 50 stand of the championship season – before Yorkshire’s patience finally paid off.

Reece (23) fell into a well-placed trap, hooking straight to Ryan Sidebottom at fine leg off Liam Plunkett.

It was a comfortable low catch for Sidebottom and it was an important one for the hosts, with Lancashire only able to add another 17 runs from that point to the close of play.

Reece had hit three boundaries, to Horton’s six, before that but the 23-year-old survived a scary moment when Tim Bresnan missed him at third slip with the visitors on 24.

Bresnan, released by England to play in the match on Sunday morning, made amends in the penultimate over by catching Karl Brown (three) lbw.

Horton remained on 48 not out, with South African Ashwell Prince yet to score.
