Running gym 'tougher than boxing' says ex-fighter Burke

Former British and Commonwealth lightweight boxing champion and two times light welterweight boxing champion Paul Burke has revealed how running his Preston gym business is tougher than life in the ring.

Almost two years after launching the Physique gym in Preston city centre, Paul says he has to approach every day as if he is gearing up for a fight.

Paul, who was British and Commonwealth lightweight champion in 1993 and light-welterweight champion in 1997, explains: "I start every day at the crack of dawn, making sure all the equipment is set up, just as I did when I was preparing for a fight.

"After that, it's about staying on top of my game and working all day, every day, to make the business a success.

"I'm the owner and manager and that means being on reception, answering the phones and showing people around, delivering leaflets and even cleaning the floor. It's constant and there's no let up, but I love the challenge and wouldn't change it for the world."

Physique, with its gym kitted out with the latest Technogym equipment, boxing and dance studios, free weights room and beauty spa, fills three floors of the elegant Sheraton House in Ormskirk Road, at the heart of what will become Preston's Tithebarn district.

Next on father of five Paul's hit list is a boxing ring, if for no other reason than to encourage his two youngest sons, Ethan, seven, and Liamn 14, to develop the natural talent they are already showing for the sport.
