Former Preston hockey starlet joins law firm

As the former goalkeeper of the England junior hockey team, Jessica Bowman watched three of her ex team-mates compete for Great Britain at the Beijing Olympics this summer.

But 24-year-old Jessica has no regrets about turning her back on a career as a sportswoman as she fulfils her life-long ambition of qualifying as a solicitor.

Jessica, who is also a former world champion brass musician, will be added to the roll of solicitors in England and Wales after a two-year training contract with Preston-based law firm MWR Solicitors.

Jessica, who won 24 England Hockey caps, turned her back on the sport at 18 to embark on six years of study to become a solicitor, starting with a law degree at the University of Liverpool and then the two-year Legal Practice Course (LPC) at The College of Law, Chester.

After completing her two-year training contract, she is now a fully-qualified solicitor with MWR’s employment law and personal injury divisions.

She said: “I’m very proud of my achievements in music and sport and could have chosen to pursue either of them as a career, but qualifying as a solicitor was always my main ambition and is by far my proudest achievement.

“Working with the public and helping people to overcome their legal problems gives me a real buzz. Now I’m qualified I want to continue working hard and my long-term ambition is to become a partner.”
