Preston winger Whaley heads to Barnsley on loan

Preston North End winger Simon Whaley has become the latest player to head out of Deepdale on loan in search of first team football, joining fellow Championship side Barnsley on a one-month emergency deal.

Whaley, who arrived at Preston from Bury in January 2006, has dropped out of first team reckoning of late after starting the season as a striker alongside Neil Mellor, ultimately forced out of the first choice XI due to the arrival of Jon Parkin after three league starts and one goal, scored on the opening day at Ipswich.

He has since made six substitute appearances in the league and one more in the Carling Cup, but has been in and out of the matchday 16.

The move sees him team up with the ex-Preston managerial trio of Simon Davey, Ryan Kidd and Kelham O'Hanlon, with former Prestonians Jon Macken and Rob Kozluk hoping to be amongst those that benefit from Whaley's creativity during his temporary stay.

The Bolton-born 23-year-old had been linked with a loan switch to League One side Leeds United, but this deal allows the player to remain and impress at Championship level until the transfer's proposed expiry date of Saturday December 6.

It has been agreed that Whaley will not be able to play when the two sides meet at Deepdale for Preston's next home league fixture on Saturday November 22, but he can play in every other game up to and including the Oakwell clash with Reading on the day the emergency loan concludes.

North End have been actively supplying players for emergency loan this season, with Whaley becoming the fifth member of the PNE squad this season to head elsewhere on a temporary deal.
