Yorkshire trounced by Lancashire

LANCASHIRE opened up their Twenty20 campaign with a big victory over arch rivals Yorkshire at Old Trafford last night.

The Lightning struck to restrict the White Rose to just 105-8 from their 20 overs after they won the toss and chose to bat first.

The mainstay of their innings was former England captain Michael Vaughan, who hit his best Twenty20 score of 36, while Rich Pyrah’s made 26.

Stephen Parry was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four wickets, while skipper Glen Chapple and Gary Keedy picked-up two each.

Lancashire made a solid start to their chase - it did not need to be anything to extravagant due to the small total they were chasing - as Steven Croft hit 21 from just nine balls.

But even though they took 47 runs off the first six overs the hosts lost three wickets, two of them to veteran pace bowler Deon Kruis and the other to left-arm spinner David Wainwright.

That was where South African Test star Ashwell Prince and Chorley ace Tom Smith came in with a fourth-wicket stand of 60 with the latter finishing on 22 not out.

Prince top scored with 44 from 36 balls as Lancashire coasted home with four and a half overs to spare.
