Since when did referees start awarding penalties for fouls committed outside the box?

Was this a rule change that was slipped in under the radar? Okay, sour grapes over, but it was a poor decision to send off Kevin Long – and while it did not hand the victory to Rotherham it went along way to helping them.

Long is a six-foot plus defender and Stanley’s tallest by some margin on Saturday, and the two Rotherham goals in the last nine minutes of the game came from high balls into the box.

We should have dealt with them better but that’s football and on another day the better footballing side would have won.

I had the great pleasure in sharing the stage at Accrington Town Hall on Friday night with John and Jimmy at the Accrington Stanley Supporters’ Fund dinner.

The passion that they have for the game was fantastic to see at such close quarters and the highlight of the night was a betting slip and letter that John had received from a disgruntled football fan.

The fan had correctly predicted 10+ results on his coupon and Stanley’s defeat at the hands of Grimsby had cost him a tidy sum. It was made all the worse for the poor chap by the fact that midway through the game Stanley had taken a 2-0 lead.

The letters from opposition fans also gave an insight into the world of a Football League manager, with one Bury fan with too much time on his hands sending John a sympathy card after the Shakers beat the Reds last week.

Finally for today, I would like to publicly back the Supporters Club statement this week calling for solidarity in the push to become a real community club.

We may not be the largest in terms of numbers but we can make a huge difference in the future of our club.

When the new shares are finally put on sale and the ownership issues are put to bed, our town will finally have the club they deserve – one that is run by the fans for the fans.
