Chris Eagles is gunning for a goal-den best – and is determined to soar into double figures to help the Clarets back into the Premier League.

The 24-year-old is in the form of his life and bagged a brilliant brace as Burnley gave Barnsley the chop in a 3-0 Turf Moor romp on Tuesday night.

That double took the former Manchester United starlet on to six for the season – and now he is determined to prove himself as one of the best in the business by landing a seasonal-best goal return.

Eagles has never bettered the seven-goal mark he reached as the Clarets reached the promised land of the Premier League two seasons ago but is deter-mined to better that figure this time around.

“I’ve always wanted double figures,” said Eagles.

“The best midfielders in the world always get into double figures – that’s what I’m aiming for.

“I want my assists up as well. If I don’t score I want an assist, like I did on Saturday with Dean, and also I scored myself.”

But Eagles admits that scoring goals is not the main priority, with the results the driving factor as boss Brian Laws tries to plot an instant return to the top flight.

“I’m pleased with what I’m doing and enjoying what I’m doing,” he said.

“I’m playing with a smile on my face but the main thing is getting the results.”

Tuesday’s win over the Tykes was the perfect response to Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Sheffield United as the Clarets were rocked by a last-gasp leveller at Bramall Lane.

And a positive Eagles said: “We are getting a bit sick of getting these late goals against us, because it feels like we’ve lost.

“When you score three away from home and you haven’t won the game you do worry.

“I don’t know what it is playing away because we’re doing the same things as we are at home. We’ve just got to get the results.

“We needed Tuesday’s win against Barnsley.

“When we went in at half-time everyone was a bit frustrated because we didn’t take our chances and I think they missed a couple.

“And they are the games that, if you don’t take your chances, they get one and go and win 1-0.

“When my strike went in I think that relaxed everyone and that’s when we really steamrolled.

“I was pleased, and it’s another great result. I thought we played brilliantly as a team. I thought we were fantastic, from the back – right across the back four.

“We’re fourth now so we’re right back up there. Hopefully Saturday against Reading we’ll get another good result.”
