A NEWLY formed martial arts club can already boast one champion - and they are hoping to unearth a few more.

Hakuda Thai Boxing Club in Burnley only opened its doors three months and has around 20 members so far.

But it is quality and not quanity that counts at the moment for the Old Maltings House-based club who can boast the highly talented Lee Cox among its ranks.

The 45-year-old from Darwen, who has come out of retirement after a seven year break, has British, English and North West kick boxing titles to his name.

And in only his second fight following a lengthy absence, he added the North West Golden Gloves title - stopping his opponent within 90 seconds of the opening round.

Club owners and chief instructors, David Burley and Craig McMillan, are hoping Cox’s presence with motivate young members - as well using their own wealth of experience.

“Between us we have have coached North West to European champions,” said McMillan, a Thai kick boxing second dan. “We have a vast experience as coaches with more than 60 years together in the sport. However, we are also hoping that having Lee in the gym will be a big motivation and inspiration to other members. He has won honours at every level and to come back after seven years and win another one shows just how good he is.”

Such members include youngsters Elliot Maxwell, 18, and 16-year-old Josh Stevens.

The pair both narrowly lost on the same bill as Cox but both turned in impressive performances - with Maxwell winning the fight of the night award.

“We are mainly about helping people improve their fitness but we would love to see more champions at the gym.”
