BLACKBURN and Darwen Boxing Academy fighters has mixed success over the weekend.

Hassan Khan, 12, beat Fleetwood’s Liam Hargreaves on points while classy Aqib Yousaf made it two wins out of three after getting the judges decision against Kyle Boothman from Blackpool.

But there were defeats for Waqar Khan, 18, and 17-year-old Usman Hussain who were both stopped in their ABA of England Junior Amat-eur Boxing Championship bouts.

Meanwhile, the Academy showed youngsters the ropes during the recent half term break.

Club founder and head coach, Yaqoob Hussain, MBE, worked with children from several primary schools – introducing them to the fun element of the noble art.

The sessions were organised by Natalie Parker and Karen Caton, Extending Schools co-ordinators for the Little Harwood, Intack and Shadsworth areas and were held at Bangor Street Community Centre and Shadsworth Leisure Centre.

“The kids really enjoyed it,” said Yaqoob. “Of course there was no contact boxing but we did some pad work and some fun circuit training.

“It was basically introducing them to the sport and showing ways of how boxing is a good way of keeping fit.”
