BURNLEY Tennis Club have been crowned Winter Indoor League Division Two champions after a dramatic final day of the season.

The team needed to beat Crow Wood 4-0 to clinch the title and hold off the challenge of second-placed Ribchester.

After racing to a 3-0 lead, the final pairing of Donna Stott and Steven Holt were tied at 6-6 with their opponents but were one point away from defeat before fighting back from 0-40 down to secure a dramatic beat-the-clock victory.

Earlier, Burnley took control thanks to victories for Steve Palmer and Holt in the men’s doubles and Susan Brown and Stott in the ladies doubles.

In the mixed doubles, Palmer and Brown cruised to victory before Stott and Holt’s last-gasp win earned the title and promotion in to Division One.

Meanwhile, Burnley Tennis Club is holding an open day to attract more people to the sport.

The event takes place at the club just of Belve-dere Road (near the fire station) on Saturday March 26 (1-4pm) and is for both adults and juniors.

There will be the chance to take part in a mini tournament or just have a knock.

The club has six all weather courts, three of which have floodlights and offers competitve membership fees.
