LOCAL teams swept the board in the first SPAR Lancashire Youth Games final of the year.

Schools turning out in their borough colours won all four categories to clinch a tag rugby ‘grand slam’.

And it was Blacko Primary School in the green of Pendle who won the main event at Preston Grasshoppers Rugby Club.

Pendle won the cup competition with Wyre finishing as runners-up and Worden in third place.

And there was reason to cheer elsewhere with East Lancashire schools winning the vase, plate and bowls events.

In the vase competition, Waddington and West Bradford Primary School, representing the Ribble Valley, took the honours with Blackburn school The Redeemer finishing as runners-up.

Belthorn Primary School from Hyndburn were the plate competition winners, defeating Wyre school Garstang St Thomas in the final.

And the clean sweep of honours was clinched by Burnley school St John the Baptist with Fylde’s Ansdell Primary in second place.

Other local schools to take part were Bretherton Endowed CofE (Chorley) and Helmshore Primary School (Rossendale).

All 16 boroughs were representing after qualifying through district events held across the county.

Dignitaries from the boroughs were guests of honour while the SPAR Lancashire Youth Games mascot Leaping Lancashire Lion kept players amused between matches.

The events are organ-ised by Lancashire Scho-ols Sports Partnerships competition managers and Lancashire Sport Partnership.
