BURNLEY wheelchair fencer Suzannah Rockett has vowed to bounce back in style after getting her World Championships off to a bumpy start in Italy yesterday.

The 44-year-old, who left Lancashire at the age of 15, took to the competition in Catania in the women’s foil category A but found it tough going, losing all five of her pool matches to finish 29th overall.

But with Friday’s individual foil competition still to come, not to mention the team event, former Burnley Primrose Hill School pupil Rockett insists she is down but far from out.

“The first day is always a bit nerve racking and tricky and unfortunately I didn’t have the best of days,” said Rockett, who like the rest of the British fencing team is being supported by Beazley.

“I don’t know what it was but I just struggled out there and the fencers I came up against were all very strong and I just didn’t have an answer.

“It is a disappointing way to get things going in Italy but the good thing is I have plenty of opportunities to put it right.

“If anything this disappointment of the first day is just going to make me want to go out there and prove what I can do even more now.

“I want to show that this isn’t the real me and I will aim to do that next time I go out.”

With the World Championships counting towards qualification for London 2012, Rockett knows she has ground to make up.
