LANCASHIRE Wolverines has enjoyed a bumper turnout at a pre-season rookie camp thanks to the Super Bowl.

The Blackburn-based American Football club has been holding camps at Witton Park over the last month to tempt new-comers to the sport.

But it was its most recent one at the weekend that caused the most interest – thanks to the showdown between New York Giants and New England Patriots.

“There is always an increase in enquiries when the Super Bowl has been on but this year there was a lot more than usual,” said Craig Nolan, the club’s media relations officer.

“We tend to get around 20 people asking about the sport but this time we had nearer 50 phone calls and emails.

“That is by far the highest we have had.”

While the biggest event in the American sporting event always helps swell squad numbers – and this year’s final was a particularly good one – Nolan hopes the club’s recent success and rise in profile has also played its part.

The club is currently preparing to kick off the new season in the BAFANL Division One following promotion last season.

The Wolverines, which is based at Blackburn Rugby Club, reached the National Division Two semi finals last year and while they missed out on a place in the Britbowl finals, a league restructuring saw them also go up in to the top flight.

“We have had a couple of good years and our junior teams are doing very well also,” added Nolan. “There are more and more people interested in playing and watching.

“We had nearly 400 specatators watching one game last season which is fantastic.

“Hopefully we will have another great season in the higher division.”

The club’s veterans return for training this week with the season due to start in April.
