PAUL Cook believes Accrington Stanley can continue to compete on a limited budget after being unveiled as the Reds’ new boss yesterday.

Cook will take charge of Stanley for the first time when they host Plymouth on Saturday, with the club only three points away from the League Two play-off places.

It has often been suggested that the Reds punched above their weight under John Coleman, who recently departed for Rochdale, but Cook is ambitious to keep that success going – even if he is reluctant to set specific targets.

“We know we’re not going to outbid people and throw all sorts of money at it, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t be as good as we can be,” said the former Burnley midfielder, who previously had a spell as a player-coach under Coleman at Stanley.

“I don’t set targets because sometimes if you don’t achieve them you think you’ve failed and sometimes you might set them too low.

“We want to entertain people and we want to do our utmost in every game to win every game this club takes part in.

“There have been some great players come through here in the last five or 10 years and if we can keep working hard and all have good values of how the game should be played, why can’t we have those times again?”
