Leicester Lions 8 Preston Grasshoppers 34

Preston overcame the elements to secure a well deserved win at Lightfoot Green.

Two tries from skipper Darren Wilson and 19 points from the boot of Marcus Jackson gave the hosts a comfortable victory.

An error ridden opening half was not helped by a thick fog that blanketed the ground and it took till the 24th minute for the opening points of the game. Jackson slotted the first of his five penalties to give the Hoppers a 3-0 lead.

Preston’s pack started to take control with an impressive scrum and a well working lineout and it was from a scrum deep in the Leicester 22 that the Wilson picked up and darted to the line. A further Jackson Penalty made it 13-0 at the break.

Leicester hit back straight after the restart, after claiming the opening kick off deep in Hoppers territory.

The ball was recycled across to the left wing and finally Jody Peacock broke through the defence to touch down cutting the deficit to 13-5.

Both sides added penalties as the game moved into the final quarter, making the score 19-8.

With Jackson starting to control the game, Hoppers finished strongly, a break through the middle of Leicester’s defence allowed Michael Jones to score in the corner. Jackson landed his 5th penalty to give the Hoppers a 27-8 lead going into the final ten minutes.

Preston were able to maintain the territorial advantage in the closing stages and rounded off the game with Wilson’s second try.

The scrum half picked up the ball and drove over the line as time expired, Jackson was successful with the resulting conversion rounding off an impressive display.

Hoppers travel to Nuneaton on Saturday.
