GESTURES: Preston keeper Andy Lonergan during the derby clash at Turf Moor
PRESTON goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has written a letter of apology to Burnley fans for his actions at the end of the recent derby at Turf Moor.
The Preston-born stopper gestured towards Clarets fans behind his goal after Burnley had recovered from a 3-1 deficit to seal a late 4-3 win.
“I am writing to formally apologise to you for my actions after the game on 11th September,” wrote Lonergan, who has been fined £5,000 by the FA and warned as to his future conduct after admitting a charge of abusive and/or provocative gestures.
“The gestures I made towards the fans after the game were totally unacceptable and I am embarrassed by my reaction to the crowd.
“We all know how the game ended. I was extremely angry and disappointed that we conceded the goals which resulted in Preston losing the game.
"However, this in no way excuses the actions and I hope you will be able to accept my apology.
“I have enjoyed participating in many eventful derby matches with Burnley both at Turf Moor and Deepdale.
"They are always one of the highlights of the season. Despite the rivalry between the clubs I am sure both sets of fans would agree.
“Whilst the result clearly wasn’t the one we wanted, my actions in the heat of the moment have tarnished what had been a thrilling game of football.
“I am truly sorry for any offence I have caused and I hope that I can move on from this incident to enjoy many more matches in goal against you.”
