Douglas serves up Thanksgiving meal

Kirk Douglas called on a few celebrity friends to help dish up a special Thanksgiving dinner to thousands of homeless people in Los Angeles.

The 92-year-old screen legend and his wife Anne - who host the event for Los Angeles Mission every year - were joined by High School Musical's Corbin Bleu, Twilight's BooBoo Stewart and a host of young actors and volunteers.

Kirk revealed he remembered what it was like to go without a turkey dinner, saying: "When I was a kid in New York looking for a job, one Thanksgiving I was offered a meal through the Salvation Army, but when I came to the window they'd ran out of meals!"

"So I'm glad to be here with my wife to make sure that they don't run out of meals," he laughed.

The Hollywood veteran also joked that his help was invaluable to the day's proceedings.

"My wife Anne makes sure that I am here every year because I used to be a waiter in a restaurant, so they need the guys like me!" he said.

In a break from serving food, Corbin explained why each year he looks forward to helping serve the lunch.

"You gotta get messy, it's all about serving the food. You get a chance to put a smile on people's faces," he explained. "I've been doing this for about five years now, me and my father we come here every year. It's a beautiful organisation, it's wonderful what they do. You've got to give back. It's a great day."
